Polymer Capacitors

Polymer High Reliability

High reliability conductive organic polymer capacitors that offer low ESR, high capacitance, and volumetric efficiency.

Overview

Overview

The KEMET Organic Capacitor (KO-CAP) is a solid electrolytic capacitor with a conductive polymer cathode capable of delivering ultra low ESR and improved capacitance retention at high frequencies. KO-CAP combines the low ESR of multilayer ceramic, the high capacitance of aluminum electrolytic, and the volumetric efficiency of tantalum into a single surface mount package. Unlike liquid electrolyte-based capacitors, KO-CAP has a very long operational life and high ripple current capabilities.

The HRA Polymer Electrolytic series offers the same performance advantages as other KO-CAP series, and are based on conservative designs with electrical screening and failure rate options associated with high reliability applications. These HRA grade components offer several surge current testing options as per the MIL-PRF-55635 and MIL-PRF-32700 performance specification and are produced in the USA.

In addition to the existing portfolio and after a significant effort in the creation and approval of the first MIL performance specification (MIL-PRF-32700) for tantalum polymer capacitors, KEMET is qualifying the new T580 and T581 in order to offer a portfolio of products included in the qualified parts list (QPL) and aligned with today's defense and aerospace application requirements. The first group of 35V capacitors is now released.

HRA Polymer solutions are available in different case sizes, form and fit.

SMD packages (T5801, T5811, T540, T541 and T543) follow EIA dimensions/footprints and the through-hole hermetically sealed series, T550 (105ºC) and T551 (125ºC) are equivalent to MIL–PRF–39006/22/25/30/31. T555 and T556 are the SMD versions of T550 and T551 series. The KEMET Tantalum Stack Polymer (TSP) Electrolytic Capacitor is designed to provide the highest CV (capacitance/voltage) ratings in a surface mount configuration. All KEMET Polymer Electrolytic solutions are available in a stack configuration.

T540 and T541 Series are the first polymer electrolytic capacitors available with failure rate options as defined by the KEMET KO-CAP Reliability Assessment method. This method utilizes accelerated conditions (voltage and temperature) applied to board-mounted samples to assess long term device reliability. T540 and T541 series are Approved for DLA Drawing 04051/04052 and specifically DLA Drawing 04052 Part Numbers with Surge Current Option B are approved under ESA/EPPL part 2.

The failure rates available are B (0.1% per 1,000 hours), C (0.01% per 1,000 hours), and D (0.001% per 1,000 hours). The KO-CAP Reliability Assessment method was developed as a result of over 10 years of research and was introduced in the new MIL-PRF-32700 performance specification.
