Military Commercial-Off-The-Shelf Frequently Asked Questions
Question: What does “COTS” mean?
Answer: COTS stands for Commercial Off The Shelf and indicates this is a standard cataloged item with no outside drawing or specification requirements.

Question: What is the difference between Military and Military COTS T493 tantalum SMD's?
Answer: The T493 is a non-PRF product available with termination and testing options desired by the military and aerospace industry.

Question: What are the available termination types on the Ta surface mount Military COTS T493 series?
Answer: Available termination options include: Tin-Lead (Sn/Pb) Solder plated, hot solder dipped, solder fused, and gold.

Question: Where are your Ta surface mount Military COTS T493 series capacitors manufactured?
Answer: These products are manufactured in the same facility where KEMET's T492 (CWR11) tantalum chips are manufactured.

Question: Is there a problem with tin whiskers on the Ta surface mount Military COTS T493 product?
Answer: No, since none of the terminations offered on this product are 100% tin, tin whiskering is not an issue.

Question: What if I only want to take advantage of one of the options offered on the Ta surface mount Military COTS T493 product?
Answer: The part numbering system for this product allows you to order any combination of the options offered.

Question: What is the difference between MIL-PRF-55365 and KEMET's T493 product?
Answer: Product manufactured under MIL-PRF-55365 are restricted to the product offering identified under this specification. KEMET's T493 is a commercial part, available with a wide range of CV and case size offerings, ESR, termination fisnishes, Weibull grading to B and C failure rate, and surge current options at +25°C and -55°C to +85°C

Question: How do I order the different options available with the T493 product
Answer: The T493 part numbering system was uniquely designed to allow the ordering party to build the part number and include all the desired options such as lead finishes, failure rate level, ESR limits, and surge current options.  See the T493 catalog section for a complete part type description and part numbering scheme.

Question: Will KEMET consider building this product to a customer drawing?
Answer: KEMET will consider building this product to a customer drawing however, this negates the COTS status of this product.

Question: Can I order specially-screened military products? If so, why can’t I get “special” parts JAN branded?
Answer: JAN branding assures all products under that specification are manufactured the same way. Any additional testing could theorectically change the performance characteristics.

Question: What is the Moisture Sensitivity Level (MSL) of your military / Ta surface mount COTS products?
Answer: Moisture Sensitivity Level (MSL) for surface mount components is based on J-STD-020. KEMET’s Tantalum / manganese dioxide surface mount components have an MSL of 1. Leaded tantalum capacitors have not been characterized for MSL, since J-STD-020 applies to surface mount.
