New DSCC Source Control Drawings Expand KEMET's DSCC Qualified Parts List to Include Conductive Polymer and Build-in Fuse Product Lines

Defense and aerospace demand for tantalum solutions continues to grow. As a joint effort between DSCC (Defense Supply Center, Columbus) and Kemet, three new source control drawings have been created for the T525 (High Temperature Conductive Polymer), T530 (High Capacitance/Ultra Low ESR Conductive Polymer) and T496 (Fused Tantalum) Series. Each of the series noted in the DSCC drawings are versions of the commercially available product lines with many stringent design and test protocols incorporated (including 100% surge current testing and accelerated voltage aging) to ensure high quality and reliability. In addition, the source drawings define a series of additional testing options that can be selected including Thermal Shock and Stability at High and Low Temperatures. These drawings provide the defense and aerospace design community with a DSCC approved document that ensures the design features of these products meet the requirements defined within each of the control drawings.

These documents were developed in response to growing needs and demands within the defense and aerospace industries for components approved for use in critical applications that offer a benign failure mode. Several reasons for this growing trend include the initiative to reduce the risk for smoke in the cockpit, the need for a failure mode that will not impact other circuitry within a critical instrument, and eliminating the potential for loose debris due to catastrophic failure. These drawings assist design teams with component selection in applications such as aviation instrumentation, guidance systems, weapons systems, displays, space exploration, and other critical applications.

The Conductive Polymer versions (T525 and T530 series) combine low ESR and high capacitance making these series ideal for microprocessor decoupling, switch mode power supplies and regulator circuits. The T496 Fused Tantalum series provides a true fail-open feature with protection from damaging short circuit conditions that is critical in applications where high fault currents exist. Each of these series offer a benign failure mode which makes them desirable for use in defense and aerospace applications such as those noted above.
