New Extended Cap Values Offered in SMD X7R MLCC with an Open Mode/Fail Safe Design

Several New Capacitance values have been added to KEMET’s surface mount, “Open Mode/ Fail Safe”, multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) portfolio in X7R dielectric. The new extended capacitance values range from 0.22 microfarads to 4.7 microfarads at rated voltages from 16 to 50 volts in EIA 0805, 1206, and 1210 case sizes. These components, which are widely used in automotive circuits, power supplies (input and output filters), and any critical application where mechanical stress is a concern, meet the requirements of the Automotive Electronics Council's AEC-Q200-Rev C. Currently offered in tolerances of K (±10%) and M (±20%), these capacitors are RoHS compliant, with 100% pure matte tin-plated terminations for excellent solderability.

These components are designed to greatly reduce the likelihood of a low-IR or short circuit condition in a board flex situation. When flexed to failure, KEMET's "Open-Mode" capacitor may experience a drop in capacitance but a short is unlikely because the crack won't typically cross opposing electrodes. Since there won't be any current leakage associated with a typical "Open-Mode" flex crack there is no localized heating and, therefore, no chance for and catastrophic and potentially costly failure event.

The operating temperature range of the X7R dielectric capacitor is between -55°C and +125°C, with zero bias capacitance shift limited to ±15% over that range.

All parts are environmentally friendly, in compliance with RoHS legislation and are capable of Pb-free reflow profiles.
