KEMET Elimination of 'S' Termination Ordering Option for Commercial Tantalum SMD and KO Conductive Polymer
Greenville, South Carolina (January 15, 2007) - To aid the industry in the challenge of converting components and processes to lead-free, KEMET Corporation (NYSE:KEM) provided part number options to meet all needs. Many of our customers initially showed a clear preference for not changing to a unique part number for the lead-free, RoHS compliant versions of qualified components.
As the conversion has progressed, the preference has shifted to one that demands unique part numbering options for each available version of product. Across the supply chain, this affects not only component suppliers, but also their distributors, EMS providers, OEMs and their design partners. The reasons for this shift are many and valid. Industry associations such as the International Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (iNEMI), the National Electronics Distributors Association (NEDA), and the EMS Forum have published position papers strongly supporting this approach. Attachment 1 provides a summary from these papers in support of unique part numbering availability and links to them.
In response to this paradigm shift, KEMET today announces our intent to eliminate the ‘S’ termination suffix code from our surface mount tantalum MnO2 and conductive polymer part identification options. This impacts the following product series: T49x, T510, T520, T530. Please note that our MIL and MIL equivalent T492 series as well as series which do not presently provide the ‘S’ termination code option are expressly omitted from this change.
Removing the ‘S’ termination code option requires that customers define the specific product construction desired by choosing either the ‘T’ suffix option, which guarantees shipment of 100% tin finish RoHS compliant product, or the ‘H’ suffix option, which guarantees shipment of SnPb finish non-RoHS compliant product. Other compliant termination options, such as gold, may also be available depending on product line. (KEMET part numbering scheme options are provided as Attachment 2.) This change may necessitate customer modification of drawings, BOMs, and / or notification to floor associates for receiving acceptance.
Many customers have already transitioned. For those who have not, we ask that you reflect on this upcoming transition and how it will impact your operations so that we may bear in mind your considerations as we progress toward the last order date of July 15, 2007. Your feedback is vital and aids us to design a strategic plan that supports our ultimate vision of being a valued and trusted partner. Together, we can accomplish this goal without negative impact to sourcing, delivery, or use.
