KEMET Spice Software

KEMET Spice Software
Version 3.7.2x

The KEMET Spice program is freeware intended to aid design engineers in analyzing the performance of these capacitors over frequency, temperature, ripple, and dc bias conditions. The capacitor types include ceramic (MLCC), tantalum, film, polymer, and aluminum-polymer capacitor types. Each capacitor type behaves differently to the conditions of the circuit, some showing no changes to moderate changes, while others showing very large changes to these conditions. Although it is a stand-alone, Windows based program, it can create files that can be imported into some commercial versions of SPICE software.

Users can Download KEMET Spice Software - Version 3.7.2x Setup or Update files. After the download is complete, double-click on it to install.

Setup / Installation File:
If this is the first version of KEMET Spice being loaded on the targeted computer, or if the previous version is lower than 3.5.3, then you must use the setup program (9034 kBytes) to load the required *.DLL and *.OCX files into the System32 directory. Because it will write these files to the System32 directory and write to the registry, you will need administrative rights to load the program successfully.
NOTE - Windows Vista users:
You must right-click on the downloaded setup file and choose “Run as administrator” to install.

KEMET Spice Software - Version 3.7.23
KEMET Spice Software Update - Version 3.7.23

Rev 3.7.23 (03-Apr 2009)
  • Eliminated several crash bugs in model creations.
  • For multiple pieces of a single part type, modified model to reflect cumulative effect.
  • Allowing one circuit to mimic several capacitors in series.
    • Allowing commercial Spice software to calculate one branch instead of several branches.
    • Look for integer (multiple pieces) as last comma-delimited entry for command-line creation of models.
      • “/Simplis C0805C226K9PAC, 50, 1.0, 1e6, , C:\Temp,50” specifies 50 pieces in Simplis model of 22 uF capacitors, at 50°C, 1.0 Vdc, center freq at 1 MHz, default file name “C0805C226K9PAC[50] 25C 1Vdc 1 MHz x50Pcs.CKT” in directory “C:\Temp”.
      • “/Simplis C0805C226K9PAC, 50, 1.2, 1e6, C0805C226K9PAC[50], C:/Temp/50C 1.2Vdc,50” specifies 50 pieces in Simplis model of 22 uF capacitors, at 50°C, 1.0 Vdc, center freq at 1 MHz, specific file name “C0805C226K9PAC[50].CKT” in directory “C:/Temp/50C 1.2Vdc”.
      • “/N T520V337M2R5ATE4R5, , 1.5,3e5, C:/Temp, ,10” specifies a NetList model of 10 pieces of T520V337M2R5ATE4R5 at 25°C, 1.5 Vdc, center freq at 300 kHz, in a file named “T520V337M2R5ATE4R5[10] 25°C 1.5 Vdc 300kHz.CKT” in directory “C:\Temp”.

Rev 3.7.22 (24-Mar 2009)
  • Temperature compensation of capacitance and ESR for MMC, MDC, MDK, and MDS (PET) film capacitors completely reworked.
  • Maximum temperature for MMC kept at 100°C, but MDC, MDK, and MDS increased to 125°C.
  • C1210, C0G, 200 and 100 WVDC parts changed thermal resistance values (decreased resistance).

Rev 3.7.2x (23-Feb 2009)
  • Added Film and Paper capacitors to model creation form for input with commercial Spice programs.
  • S-Parameter files corrected headings (mag-s11, ang-s11, mag-s21, ang-s21, mag-s12, ang-s12, mag-s22, ang-s22)
  • Changed V-20% level for stacked ceramics (200 and 500V) to conform to BR, BQ requirements.
  • Created over-ride function when creating single ASCII export files to conform to Ansoft, Mentor (*.sp) , NetList (with “.END” or “.ENDS” closing line), Sigrity (*.ckt), and Simplis (*.ckt) model formats.
  • Cadence file creation:
    • Changed file names to all lower case lettering (*.txt, *.dcl, *.dcm).
    • Three format changes in *.dcm files.
    • Added film cadence models.
  • Mentor file creation:
    • Changed from Touchstone impedance format files to NetList type of files, “.ENDS” as last line.
    • File names include “Kemet_”, then part number, and ending with “.SP” as file type.
  • Simplis file creation:
    • Second line in file is comment line required for seamless integration to Simples software.
    • Second comment line now includes “capacitor” description and declaration of polar or non-polar.
  • Adjusted ESRs for tantalum-polymer product <= 6 milliohms to account for board-mount related increase.
  • Removed restriction to keep bias voltage <=95% of rated to allow some ripple voltage – ripple voltage and current will be zero if biased at rated voltage.
  • Changed AC rating for film capacitors to those based on catalog DC/AC ratings. Film AC ratings are RMS voltage. AC ratings reduce to 50% Vdc at 500 Hz.
  • Changed the maximum temperature for paper dielectric capacitors from previous limit of 150°C to 100°C (my error).
  • Added ten (10) tantalum part types, and one (1) ceramic.
  • Changed “Part List.XLS” reducing piece count from >7,000 down to 645 – mostly decade values.

KEMET FIT Calculator

KEMET FIT Calculator Software
Version 3.1.0

A method of predicting reliability based on stress and environmental factors has been available for many capacitor types. The calculations found in MIL-HDBK-217 (revision F) allow the ambient temperature, application bias, and environmental factors to create multipliers of established failure rates for many military part types. Based on the monitored reliability of the non-military, commercial part types, these same multipliers can be used to define a projected application failure rate. The failure rates are listed as “FIT” (failures in time), and “MTBF” (mean time before failure).

This calculator software is intended to follow the calculations spelled out in this handbook for the specific part types that KEMET manufactures: ceramic multilayer capacitors, solid-tantalum capacitors, and the latest, the solid-aluminum capacitors. Just enter the capacitance, the voltage rating, and the part type, and the calculations are immediate. Manipulate the temperature and the voltage to see the impacts instantly.

Download the FIT Calculator Software manual in PDF format to see the impact of each element of the program, or activate the Help screen to search for additional information on the calculations and all of the elements.

This software is applicable for Windows(95, 98, 2000 and XP) and NT. Please refer to the program for a revision history from previous versions.

Download KEMET FIT Software - Version 3.1.0 Once you have downloaded the application to your system, click on it to install it.

Add this file to update from previous versions without the need to have administrative rights (no dll or ocx files are copied to the system directory).
